The loss of Attorney General Bill Schuette to State Senator Gretchen Whitmer was a major disappointment. Schuette was a true believer in the need for bold new ideas in education, and in continuing what works in the state’s long-standing education reform opportunities. Whitmer seems a true believer in the educational status quo. Her biggest idea seems to be the idea of offering high school students alternatives to the traditional four-year college path, such as technical apprenticeships and skilled trades courses, but that does little to make sure they are well educated to begin with and could mean result in unintentional tracking which confines students to one path, versus allowing them to see the benefit of many.
