The President’s nomination of Ms. Margaret Spellings to the nation’s top education post is a welcome move and underscores the Administration’s continued commitment to sound education policy that unites freedom and accountability in American education. While Secretary of Education Rod Paige’s strong commitment, tenacity and common sense will be missed, Ms. Spellings is a seasoned leader who will bring the experience and knowledge that is necessary to translate vision into tangible improvements for our schools.
Education reformers can be gratified knowing that the Administration’s commitment to quality learning opportunities for families will continue under Ms. Spellings. Her support for growth among charter schools and choices for poor children has been invaluable. The Center for Education Reform looks forward to working with the new education team to ensure that all children have access to a quality education.
