Charter Schools Number Nearly 4,000 Nationwide (2006)
September 19, 2006. Nearly 4,000 charter schools opened for the 2006-07 school year in 40 states and the District of Columbia, an 11 percent increase from the 3,600 schools open in 2005-06, according to the Center for Education Reform (CER).
